The Day I Spent Eid in Wonderland

My first Eid in Australia set the bar very high. This is why  I had great expectations for Eid el-Adha and I was not disappointed.

The celebration started early (really early) in the morning with the Eid prayer at Auburn Progress Park.

DSCN1984I’ll try not to complain too much about my dear brothers. First there was this guy who blocked the gate with his car, delaying the imam’s arrival. Then, there were those who left between prayer and the sermon. I assumed that they were heading to work… then I turned and saw, right in front of the imam, people forming circles and chatting. What an Ummah ! But let’s be positive there was a bouncy castle!

DSCN1993Yes you can be in your 20’s and still enjoy jumping around like a crazy kid with your kurta floating in the air. Talk about Peter Pan syndrome!

Then we went to the reception hall for lunch. So here I am back in Little Mosque in the Prairie. When you’re a fan of TV shows like me playing in one of you favorite series’ is a dream came true!

For the second time, I spent Eid with people who look like the actors, who dress like them and who speak like them (specially when they salam each other, it still is an Arabic phrase but with this cool English vibe : ‘Slam aleykoom!’). Even the hall looked like the hall they use in the show. Check this out!

Once again, the food looked and tasted good. This is what happens when you have a half-Indian half-Lebanese buffet and don’t get me started on the desserts : burfee, brownie, baklava and my last free macaroons (but that’s another story).

Even the donuts had a halal certification logo when usually they’re full with animal fats… and the Pepsi cans were speaking Arabic.

Special mention goes to the decorations. Like the tent for Eid el-Fitr you have to come to Australia to see that. Amazing! I think we’re ready to compete with Christmas in terms of merchandising.

And last but not least this is what they call leftovers in Wonderland :

I thank you all for making this day happened. Roza namaz qabool insha Allah and huge salam to those who were celebrating in South Africa!
